EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts two intriguing bird species native to the island of Madagascar: the Crested Partridge (Rollulus rouloul) and the Madagascar Plover (Charadrius thoracicus). The image is taken from the "Dictionnaire de Sciences Naturelles: Ornithologie" (Dictionary of Natural Sciences: Ornithology) published in Paris between 1816 and 1830. The illustration was created by the skilled painter of natural history, Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), who later became an artist at the Museum of Natural History. The Crested Partridge is a ground-dwelling bird with distinctive crest feathers on its head and a vibrant plumage of chestnut and black. It is a resident bird of Madagascar and is considered a vulnerable species due to habitat loss and hunting. The Madagascar Plover, also known as the Madagascar Thick-knee, is a wading bird with a distinctive black and white plumage and bright red legs. It is a vulnerable species, with populations declining due to habitat loss, human disturbance, and predation by introduced species. The engraving was produced by Madame Massard, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The meticulous detail and vibrant colors of this engraving are a testament to the high-quality production values of the time. This historical artwork not only showcases the beauty of these unique bird species but also serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect them and their habitats.
