EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving showcases two striking waterbirds: the Collared Pratincole (Glareola pratincola) and the Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus). The Collared Pratincole, a slender wading bird with a distinctive black collar around its neck, is depicted standing on one leg in shallow water, its beak pointed intently towards the ground. The Greater Flamingo, with its iconic pink coloration and long, curved legs, stands gracefully in the background, its head turned towards the Collared Pratincole. This beautiful illustration is from the "Dictionnaire de Naturalisie: Ornithologie" (Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology) published in Paris between 1816 and 1830. The work was directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin and engraved by Rebel, with the illustration itself being the creation of Jean Gabriel Pretre. Pretre was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist at the Museum of Natural History. The intricately detailed engraving showcases the birds' feather patterns and textures, as well as the subtle variations in color and form. The use of stipple engraving, a technique that involves the application of small dots of ink to create shading and texture, adds to the depth and realism of the image. This historical artwork is a testament to the meticulous observation and documentation of natural history during the early 19th century. The Collared Pratincole and Greater Flamingo, both native to Europe, Asia, and Africa, were among the many species that were studied and recorded during this time, contributing to our understanding and appreciation of the natural world.
