EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Enrique de Aguilera y Gamboa, Marquis de Cerralbo (1845-1922), a prominent Spanish politician and archaeologist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Madrid, Cerralbo studied law and politics, and later developed a deep interest in archaeology. His political career began in 1871 when he was appointed as the Secretary of State for the Navy, and he went on to hold various high-ranking positions in the Spanish government. Despite his political pursuits, Cerralbo's passion for archaeology never waned. He was a founding member of the Spanish Archaeological Society and played a significant role in the excavation of numerous archaeological sites in Spain. He also amassed an impressive collection of art and artifacts, which he displayed in his palace, the Palacio de Cerralbo, now a museum in Madrid. This engraving, produced in the late 19th or early 20th century, captures the Marquis in his prime, with a distinguished moustache and a serious expression. The vibrant colors bring the print to life, making the Marquis's regal attire and refined features stand out. The engraving, created by Rico, highlights the intricacies of Cerralbo's clothing and the rich textures of his surroundings. Cerralbo's legacy continues to be felt in both Spanish politics and archaeology. His political achievements helped shape the country's history, while his archaeological discoveries and collections have enriched Spain's cultural heritage. This print serves as a testament to his enduring impact and the fascinating intersection of politics and archaeology in Spanish history.
