EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the sleek and powerful de Havilland DH-115 Sud Est Mistral, a piston-engined airliner that graced the skies during the 1950s. The Mistral, also known as the SE.535, was a four-engined low-wing monoplane produced by the Société Nationale de Constructions Aérospatiales du Sud-Est (Sud-Est) in France. The Mistral was an evolution of the successful de Havilland DH.114 Heron, which was also a low-wing monoplane, but the Mistral featured more powerful engines and a larger fuselage, allowing it to carry more passengers and fly longer distances. The Mistral was designed to meet the needs of the French Air Force (Armee de l'Air) for a regional airliner that could provide efficient and reliable transportation for its personnel and cargo. Despite its military origins, the Mistral was a formidable aircraft that boasted impressive performance capabilities. It was capable of cruising at speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour (186 miles per hour) and had a maximum range of over 2,000 kilometers (1,243 miles). The Mistral was also equipped with advanced features for the time, including a pressurized cabin and retractable landing gear. This photograph captures the Mistral in all its glory, with its sleek lines and powerful engines on full display. The aircraft's distinctive markings, including the red and white stripes and the number "8 PR NO 130," identify it as belonging to the French Air Force. The Mistral remained in service with the French military until the late 1960s, making way for more modern jet-powered aircraft. Today, this iconic aircraft is fondly remembered as a testament to the ingenuity and innovation of the aviation industry during the post-war era.
