EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Agama of Port Jackson and Anole of Cape of Good Hope," is an exquisite example of natural history illustration from the 19th century. The illustration is taken from Jussieus Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The work was produced under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, with the illustration being the creation of Jean Gabriel Pretre and the engraving being executed by Cellai. The Agama of Port Jackson, also known as the Eastern Water Dragon, is depicted on the left side of the image. Native to Australia, this reptile is characterized by its elongated body, covered in rough, keeled scales, and a distinct crest running down its spine. The Agama is shown in a semi-fossorial posture, with its tail curled around its body for camouflage. On the right side of the image is the Anole of Cape of Good Hope, or the Cape Girdled Lizard. This species is native to South Africa and is easily identified by its bright, iridescent green coloration and distinct crest running down its spine. The Anole is shown in a more active posture, with its tongue extended, ready to capture prey. The intricate detail and lifelike quality of this engraving are a testament to the skill and artistry of the illustrator and engraver. The use of stipple engraving, a technique that involves the application of tiny dots to create shading and texture, adds depth and dimension to the image. This beautiful illustration not only showcases the natural history of these two fascinating reptiles but also serves as a reminder of the rich artistic and scientific heritage of the 19th century.
