EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection takes us back in time to the bustling Trading Post of the Dutch East India Company in Hooghly, Bengal, circa 1665. The scene is alive with activity and cultural exchange between the Dutch traders and their Indian counterparts. On the left side of the image, we see a majestic view of the river Ganges adorned with several ships, symbolizing trade and commerce. Atop this vibrant setting emerges a long procession of Indians making their way towards the trading post. Leading this colorful parade are a Dutch trumpeter and standard-bearers proudly displaying Dutch flags. Halfway through the procession, two important figures can be seen carried in a palanquin - possibly high-ranking Dutch officials or merchants. To the right lies an encampment featuring an Indian official's tent surrounded by horses, cows, elephants, and dromedaries – showcasing both local customs and exotic animals. Adding an intriguing touch to this historical snapshot is a cemetery on the right side of the composition – reminding us that even amidst bustling trade activities, life continues its natural cycle. Intricately detailed at bottom right is a stela bearing Pieter Sterthemius and Maria Calandrini's alliance weapon – perhaps signifying their significant role in fostering relations between these two cultures during that era. This remarkable canvas print by Hendrik van Schuylenburgh beautifully captures not only historical events but also serves as a testament to cross-cultural interactions that shaped our world today.
