EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection showcases Plate 27 of Semele Wish Semele divino Ious concubitu occiditur. Created by Antonio Tempesta, an Italian artist born in Florence in 1555 and later residing in Rome until his passing in 1630, this etching is a remarkable piece from his series based on Ovid's Metamorphoses. The image measures approximately 4 1/16 by 5/8 inches (103 x 117 cm) and beautifully captures the tragic tale of Semele. In Greek mythology, she was a mortal woman who became pregnant with Zeus' child. However, her desire to witness Zeus' divine form led to her demise when he revealed himself as lightning bolts during their lovemaking. Tempesta skillfully depicts this climactic moment as Semele is consumed by flames while Zeus hovers above her transformed into thunderbolts. The intricate details and masterful use of shading bring depth and intensity to the scene, evoking a sense of both awe and tragedy. This stunning print serves as a testament to Tempesta's artistic prowess and storytelling ability. It transports viewers back to ancient times, allowing them to experience the profound emotions conveyed through this mythological narrative. Whether displayed for personal enjoyment or educational purposes, this artwork undoubtedly captivates all who lay eyes upon it.
