Models of SS and RMS Britannic BL22639_002
Models of the SS Britannic and the RMS Britannic, photographed by Bedford Lemere and Company in May 1914. The smaller SS Britannic was launched by White Star Line in 1874 and scrapped in 1903. Her primary role was the carriage of immigrant passengers across the Atlantic between Liverpool and New York. The second White Star ship to bear the name Britannic was an Olympic-class ocean liner launched in February 1914 as a sister ship of RMS Titanic. Like her namesake, she too was built by Harland and Wolff as a transatlantic passenger liner, but following the outbreak of the First World War she was requisitioned as a hospital ship and became HMHS Britannic (His Majestys Hospital Ship) and was sunk in 1916 after striking a mine

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph by Bedford Lemere and Company, two magnificent models of White Star Line vessels, the SS Britannic and the RMS Britannic, proudly stand side by side. The smaller model, SS Britannic, was launched in 1874 and marked the beginning of White Star Line's transatlantic passenger service between Liverpool and New York. With a primary focus on carrying immigrant passengers, this ship played an essential role in the mass migration from Europe to North America. The second model, RMS Britannic, is an Olympic-class ocean liner that graced the waters in February 1914. Launched as a sister ship to the ill-fated RMS Titanic, both vessels were built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Initially designed as a transatlantic passenger liner, RMS Britannic's destiny took a different turn following the outbreak of the First World War. In 1915, she was requisitioned as a hospital ship and renamed HMHS Britannic. Tragically, she met her end in 1916 when she struck a mine in the Aegean Sea, resulting in the loss of over 30 lives. This evocative image, captured by Adolphe Augustus Boucher for Historic England, provides a fascinating glimpse into the history of these iconic White Star Line ships, their roles in maritime history, and the poignant stories they carry. The SS Britannic, a pioneer in transatlantic migration, and the RMS Britannic, a symbol of hope turned tragedy, stand as testaments to the enduring allure of the sea and the indomitable spirit of those who sailed upon her.
