Hangar support column JLP01_08_084165

HEATHROW AIRPORT, B E A SERVICING HANGAR, HEATHROW, HILLINGDON, GREATER LONDON. A steel octagonal column being lowered by a crane into a shaft, part of the construction of foundations for the BEA aircraft servicing hangar at Heathrow Airport.
In October 1969 Laing announced that its Industrial Engineering Branch had been awarded a contract for construction of an aircraft servicing hangar for British European Airways at Heathrow Airport. It was the companys second major contract at Heathrow, following the completion of the BEA and BOAC cargo terminal. The hangar was designed to accommodate new airbus jets and existing aircraft. For the foundations, four 75ft shafts were sunk, the lower sections of which were filled with concrete before octagonal columns, each with a diameter of 8ft, were lowered into the shafts. The remainder was then filled with concrete, and the roof was eventually supported by the columns. Braithwaite engineers manufactured the steelwork for the columns and roof; C V Buchan sank the shafts

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of the BEA aircraft servicing hangar at Heathrow Airport. The image showcases a steel octagonal column being carefully lowered by a crane into one of the four 75ft shafts that were sunk for the foundations of the hangar. This particular column, with an impressive diameter of 8ft, played a crucial role in supporting the roof structure. In October 1969, Laing's Industrial Engineering Branch proudly announced their contract to construct this state-of-the-art facility for British European Airways. It was an exciting project that aimed to accommodate both new airbus jets and existing aircraft. The complexity and precision involved in creating such a monumental structure are evident in this photograph. Braithwaite engineers skillfully manufactured the steelwork for both the columns and roof, while C V Buchan expertly sank the shafts. This image not only highlights remarkable engineering feats but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and progress. It symbolizes how innovation can shape our surroundings and pave the way for advancements within industries like aviation. Preserved by Historic England Archive, this print offers us a glimpse into history—a reminder of past achievements that continue to impact our present-day experiences at Heathrow Airport.
