Bradfield House OP01896

Bradfield House, Bradfield, Uffculme, Devon, April 1853. Unknown photographer, albumen print. One of a remarkable series of photographs taken before and after the architect John Hayward extensively remodelled and restored the property for Sir John Walrond between 1852 and 1854. The house had been the seat of the Walrond family since the 13th century, and incorporated a medieval hall at its core. It is unclear whether the architect or the owner, or both, were responsible for recording building work, which included moving the main entrance to the south front, stripping roughcast and adding a service wing to the west

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Bradfield House in all its grandeur during the Victorian era. Taken in April 1853 by an unknown photographer, this albumen print is part of a remarkable series documenting the extensive remodeling and restoration work carried out by architect John Hayward for Sir John Walrond between 1852 and 1854. Bradfield House, located in Bradfield, Uffculme, Devon, had been the cherished seat of the Walrond family since the 13th century. The photograph showcases the architectural transformation that took place under Hayward's skilled hands. The house's medieval hall at its core remained intact but was now surrounded by elegant additions and alterations. The image raises questions about who exactly commissioned these photographs - whether it was the architect himself or Sir John Walrond or perhaps both parties collaborating to document this significant undertaking. Regardless of their origin, these images provide invaluable insight into a momentous period of change for Bradfield House. Notably captured are some key modifications made to the property: relocating the main entrance to face southwards, removing roughcast from certain areas to reveal original stonework beneath, and adding a service wing on its western side. These changes undoubtedly enhanced both functionality and aesthetics while preserving elements of historical significance. Preserved within Historic England's archives as part of their Picturing England collection, this print offers us a glimpse into Victorian architecture and design practices while showcasing one manor house's evolution through time.
