Road rolling, 1909. Creator: Dorozhno-Stroitel'nyi Otdel
Road rolling, 1909. Photographs documenting various stages in the construction of dirt roads in the Tomsk region by workers and engineers of the road-building department of the Russian Resettlement Administration. The albums date from 1906-8 and 1909. The Russian state paid for the construction of roads such as those depicted in the albums in order to connect settlers with a railroad line, a navigable river, or commercial-industrial centers. The overall purpose of the road-building program was to promote the colonization of the taiga (moist coniferous forest regions) of Siberia. The albums show the construction of roads in the region between the main line of the Trans-Siberian Railroad and the Chet and Kandat Rivers in Tomsk gubernia (governorate). EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Road Rolling, 1909," is a captivating image documenting the construction of a dirt road in the Tomsk region of Siberia, Russia. The photograph was taken by the Road-building Department of the Russian Resettlement Administration, as part of a larger collection of photographs from 1906-1908 and 1909. The Russian government funded the construction of roads like this one to connect settlers with railroad lines, navigable rivers, or commercial-industrial centers, as part of a larger colonization effort to promote settlement in the taiga (moist coniferous forest regions) of Siberia. The photograph shows a group of men, likely workers and engineers, gathered around a road roller, a large machine used to compact and smooth the gravel surface of the road. The road is located between the main line of the Trans-Siberian Railroad and the Chet' and Kandat Rivers in Tomsk gubernia (governorate). The image captures the raw beauty of the Siberian landscape, with the dense forest in the background serving as a stark contrast to the human activity taking place in the foreground. The construction of roads in this region was a significant undertaking, requiring the meeting of frontiers between the natural environment and human settlement. The photograph offers a glimpse into the past, providing a historical record of the challenges and triumphs of this period in Russian history. The image is a valuable addition to the heritage of both the Novosibirsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife and the Library of Congress, serving as a reminder of the rich history and cultural significance of Siberia and its people.
