EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white portrait captures Gathorne Gathorne-Hardy, the 1st Earl of Cranbrook, a prominent English politician in 1881. The artist, E Stodart, skillfully portrays Hardy's dignified profile with meticulous detail. Hardy's political career was remarkable; he began as a Conservative member for Leominster in 1856 and later achieved the extraordinary feat of defeating William Gladstone to win the parliamentary seat of Oxford in 1865. Throughout his tenure, he held various ministerial positions within Conservative governments until retiring from public life in 1892 when he was bestowed with an earldom. The engraving is taken from Alexander Charles Ewalds' publication titled "The Right Hon Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield, and His Times" published by William Mackenzie in London during the same year.
