EDITORS COMMENTS
- A Powerful Image of Resilience and Sacrifice This print captures a pivotal moment in history during the Second World War. The image depicts HMS Ark Royal, a British Royal Navy aircraft carrier, being struck by a torpedo from a German submarine within sight of Gibraltar. The impact caused the mighty vessel to list at an alarming angle of 12 degrees. Despite this devastating blow, the resilience and bravery displayed by the crew are evident in their swift response to save lives. Astonishingly, out of the 1,541 individuals on board, only one life was lost. This remarkable feat is a testament to their unwavering determination and teamwork amidst chaos. HMS Ark Royal played an instrumental role throughout the war as it carried numerous aircraft and engaged in critical missions off Norway and in search of the formidable German battleship Bismarck. It also participated in vital Malta Convoys that supplied much-needed resources to sustain resistance efforts. Tragically, despite its valiant service record, HMS Ark Royal met its untimely demise when it succumbed to its injuries from the torpedo attack on November 13th, 1941. The ship sank just one day later. This poignant photograph serves as a reminder of both triumphs and sacrifices made during times of conflict. It stands as a symbol of courage against adversity while honoring those who served aboard this iconic warship.
