The Philadelphia Stock Exchange

Engraving by William Henry Bartlett shows pedestrian and horsecart traffic on the street in front of the Merchants Exchange Building, home of the Philadelphia Stock Exchange, at Third and Walnut Streets, Philadelphia, 1839. The neo-classical building was designed by William Strickland, built primarily of Pennsylvania marble, and completed in 1834. Since 1952 the building houses the offices of the Independence National Historical Park. The smaller Greek Revival building on the left is the First bank of the United States (1791 - 1811) which was later Stephen Girards Bank (which built the Merchants Exchange building) and is now a museum. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the bustling streets of Philadelphia in 1839, showcasing the iconic Merchants Exchange Building, home to the Philadelphia Stock Exchange. Engraved by William Henry Bartlett, this image showcases a vibrant scene with pedestrians and horse-drawn carts navigating their way through the city's busy thoroughfare at Third and Walnut Streets. The neo-classical architecture of the Merchants Exchange Building stands tall and proud, designed by William Strickland using Pennsylvania marble. Completed in 1834, it served as a hub for financial activities until 1952 when it became offices for Independence National Historical Park. On the left side of the photograph is another Greek Revival building known as Stephen Girards Bank, formerly known as First Bank of the United States from 1791 to 1811. As we delve into this historical snapshot frozen in time, we witness an era where commerce thrived on these very streets. The large group of people captured in this picture represents a diverse range of individuals engaged in various economic pursuits within one frame - a true testament to Philadelphia's significance as an economic center during that period. With its archival charm and attention to detail, this print transports us back to a time when horse-drawn carriages ruled the roads and bustling crowds filled every corner. It serves not only as a window into our past but also reminds us of how cities evolve over time while preserving their rich history.
