Harlequin Bug - Tectocoris diophthalmus
Tectocoris diophthalmus, commonly known as the Hibiscus Harlequin Bug or Cotton Harlequin Bug, is a brightly coloured convex and rounded shield-shaped bug with a metallic sheen that grows to about 20 mm. Adult females are mostly orange and males are both blue and red or orange. The colours are quite variable. It lives in Northern and Eastern Australia, New Guinea and several Pacific Islands in habitats ranging from urban to agricultural and coastal areas. The Hibiscus Harlequin Bugs feed on many species of the Hibiscus family (Malvaceae), as well as cultivated cotton. They will also eat Illawarra flame tree flowers, grevillea and bottlebrush saplings. They pierce the stems of young shoots and suck the sap. Females lay clusters of eggs around twigs and then guard them until they hatch. They are also known as " stink bugs" as they have scent glands which produce a bad smell which, when it is emitted by one bug, triggers others in the group, multiplying the bad smell. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the vibrant and enchanting Harlequin Bug, also known as Tectocoris diophthalmus. With its convex and rounded shield-shaped body, adorned with a mesmerizing metallic sheen, this bug is truly a sight to behold. Growing up to 20 mm in size, the Hibiscus Harlequin Bug displays an array of colors that vary from orange for adult females to a striking combination of blue and red or orange for males. Native to Northern and Eastern Australia, New Guinea, and various Pacific Islands, this bug thrives in diverse habitats ranging from urban areas to agricultural fields and coastal regions. Its diet primarily consists of plants belonging to the Hibiscus family (Malvaceae), including cultivated cotton. However, it also indulges in Illawarra flame tree flowers, grevillea blossoms, and bottlebrush saplings by piercing their stems and extracting sap. Notably named "stink bugs" these insects possess scent glands that emit an unpleasant odor when triggered by one bug's release. This distinct smell acts as a defense mechanism against potential threats while simultaneously alerting other bugs within their group. Photographed by Rundstedt B. Rovillos exclusively for Fine Art Storehouse's collection without any post-processing alterations or enhancements ("Straight Out Of Camera" - SOOC), this image captures the raw beauty of nature at its finest.
