Coat of arms copperplate 17th century Greenville and Langham
This image is from a copperplate engraving, and shows part of a roll of arms from Richard Blomes (Britannia), an atlas published in 1673. It features the coats of arms of people who contributed towards the completion of the work - starting with King Charles II. Each page includes 35 coats of arms, presented here in pairs. These two coats of arms are from folio (page) 10 of the work. In old English, ans appeared as a longs (which looks like an f ), while ss appeared as fs. The letters V and U can be confused, and com was an abbreviation for County. A number is assigned to each benefactor. Here are the texts accompanying each coat of arms (followed by modernised English where appropriate): 310 George GREENVILLE of Fofcott in Com Bucks Efq (Foscott) 311 Sir Will: LANGHAM of Walgrave in Com Northampton Kt. (Sir William Langham, 1625-1700) More from the same coat-of-arms series (many more via blue link)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a copperplate engraving from the 17th century, featuring a roll of arms from Richard Blome's Britannia atlas published in 1673. The image beautifully displays the coats of arms of individuals who contributed to the completion of this remarkable work, starting with none other than King Charles II himself. Each page within this collection presents 35 coats of arms, and here we have two exquisite examples from folio (page) 10. The text accompanying these particular coat of arms provides intriguing insights into their owners. The first belongs to George GREENVILLE of Fofcott in Com Bucks Efq (Foscott), while the second is attributed to Sir Will: LANGHAM of Walgrave in Com Northampton Kt. (Sir William Langham, 1625-1700). It is fascinating to note that during this period, old English lettering often substituted "s" for "f" and "u" for "v". Additionally, abbreviations were commonly used such as "com" for County. As we delve deeper into this series, it becomes evident that each coat of arms carries its own historical significance and tells a unique story. This antique print serves as a window into British culture and tradition, offering glimpses into familial connections and heraldic symbolism. With its ornate design and meticulous craftsmanship captured through copperplate engraving techniques, this image transports us back in time to an era where friendship bonds were celebrated through artful decoration.
