The brave old Hendrick the great sachem or chief of the Mohawk Indians

3519631 The brave old Hendrick the great sachem or chief of the Mohawk Indians; (add.info.: Print of Hendrick, Tiyanoka, also spelled Theyanoguin or Tee Yee Neen Ho Ga Row, the great Mohawk sachem, half-length portrait, facing left, wearing European style military uniform and holding hatchet in his right hand and a wampum belt in his left. Hendrick was one of four Mohawk Indians who visited England in 1710 and again in 1740. On his second visit he received elaborate court clothing trimmed with gold lace. This print may be based on a painting made from that visit. Impressions of this engraving were offered for sale in the November 1755 issue of Gentlemen's Magazine within months of Hendricks's death. Hendrick negotiated peace between Six Nations and Great Britain at the Albany Conference of 1754. He was killed during the Battle of Lake George on September 8th, 1755.); Universal History Archive/UIG

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful and poignant print captures the brave old Hendrick, the great sachem or chief of the Mohawk Indians, in all his regal glory. Dressed in a European-style military uniform and holding a hatchet in one hand and a wampum belt in the other, Hendrick exudes strength and resilience. Hendrick was not only a respected leader among his people but also a skilled diplomat who negotiated peace between the Six Nations and Great Britain at the Albany Conference of 1754. Tragically, his life was cut short during the Battle of Lake George on September 8th, 1755. The details captured in this portrait speak volumes about Hendrick's character - from his dignified stance to the intricate gold lace trim on his court clothing received during his visit to England. This print serves as a reminder of both the rich history of Native American tribes like the Mohawks and the sacrifices made by their leaders in pursuit of peace. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back to a time when alliances were forged through diplomacy and conflicts were resolved through negotiation. The legacy of figures like Hendrick continues to inspire us today as we strive for understanding and unity across cultures.
