EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of purity and chastity in a scene from Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais' renowned play, "The Marriage of Figaro". The delicate engraving by Thomas Naudet depicts a moment that epitomizes the transformation of innocence at the hands of one's spouse. Set against the backdrop of 18th century Paris, this unauthorized edition showcases one of the most successful plays of its time. "The Marriage of Figaro" serves as a sequel to Beaumarchais' earlier work, "The Barber of Seville" and was written in 1778 but not officially performed until 1784. This particular edition, published in Switzerland under the guise of Seville and Count d Almaviva, adds an element of mischief to its imprint. Measuring at 12.7x21.1 cm, this enchanting print is part of a private collection and represents one among several editions released within the first year after the play's debut. Accompanied by five folding plates illustrating key scenes from the play, it offers viewers a glimpse into the world created by Beaumarchais. With its intricate details and evocative imagery, this print transports us back to an era filled with passion and intrigue. It serves as a testament to both artistic excellence and historical significance while reminding us that love can transform even the purest souls into something entirely new when placed in their beloved's hands.
