Statue of Amenemhat III, c. 1859-1814 BC (granodiorite)

499523 Statue of Amenemhat III, c.1859-1814 BC (granodiorite)
by Egyptian 12th Dynasty (1991-1786 BC); 51.2x19.8x18.4 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: Even though this statue of a king is uninscribed, its distinctive features identify it without any doubt as a portrait of Amenemhat III. The heavy brows, prominent cheekbones, hollow cheeks, jutting lower jaw, and tightly bunched muscles at the corners of the mouth make a strikingly realistic impression. Not realistic, however, are the kings supersized ears. Instead, they symbolize the rulers willingness to hear the prayers of his people.
If this image had been carved in relief, the kings hands would have been uplifted in worship. Here, however, to prevent the breakage of projecting limbs, the rulers hands are pressed flat against the front of his kilt, a portion of which is looped over his belt.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Statue of Amenemhat III, a masterpiece from the Egyptian 12th Dynasty. Crafted between 1859-1814 BC, this granodiorite sculpture stands at an impressive height of 51.2 centimeters. Though lacking inscriptions, there is no doubt that this statue represents King Amenemhat III due to its distinctive features. The artist skillfully captured the king's heavy brows, prominent cheekbones, hollow cheeks, and jutting lower jaw with utmost realism. However, what truly sets this artwork apart are the exaggeratedly large ears which symbolize the ruler's willingness to listen to his people's prayers. Had this image been carved in relief style, we would have seen the king's hands raised in worship. To ensure durability and prevent any damage to projecting limbs, his hands are instead pressed flat against the front of his kilt. A portion of it elegantly loops over his belt. Dating back to the reign of Amenemhat III during Egypt's 12th Dynasty (1980-1801 BC), this statue now finds its home at Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. Acquired through purchase from J. H Wade Fund and made available by Bridgeman Images for public viewing without copyright restrictions or commercial use limitations.
