Curtain Fig Tree at Atherton Tableland, Tropical North Queensland, Australia

The Curtain Fig Tree is one of the largest trees in Tropical North Queensland, Australia, and one of the best known attractions on the Atherton Tableland. The Curtain Fig Tree is of the strangler fig species Ficus virens. Normally these figs germinate on top of another tree and try to grow roots into the ground. Once this important step is accomplished, the fig will grow vigorously, finally kill the hosting tree and then grow on independently. In this case, the hosting tree tilted towards the next one; the fig also grows around that one. Its curtain of aerial roots drops 15 metres (49 feet) to the ground. Although these figs kill their hosts, they are an epiphyte which basically feeds from the ground

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic beauty of the Curtain Fig Tree at Atherton Tableland in Tropical North Queensland, Australia. Towering above its surroundings, this tree is one of the largest and most renowned attractions in the region. Belonging to the strangler fig species Ficus virens, this remarkable tree follows a unique life cycle. It begins by germinating on top of another tree, sending roots down into the ground for stability and nourishment. As it grows stronger, it eventually overtakes and kills its host tree, continuing to thrive independently. In this particular instance, not only did the hosting tree succumb to its fate but also tilted towards another neighboring one. The result is an awe-inspiring curtain-like display of aerial roots that gracefully cascade 15 meters (49 feet) down to touch the earth below. Despite their destructive nature towards their hosts, these figs are considered epiphytes as they derive nutrients from the surrounding soil rather than directly from their host trees. This symbiotic relationship with nature allows them to flourish within tropical rainforests like those found in Northern Queensland. Artie Photography has masterfully captured this natural wonder against a clear blue sky on a sunny day. The vibrant colors and intricate details showcased in this photograph truly highlight Mother Nature's artistry at its finest.
