EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of ancient art, the Relief with temple interior, dating back to 400-300 BC. Crafted from Pentelic marble and discovered in the sanctuary of Amphiaraos at Oropos, this relief takes the form of a temple and depicts various stages in the healing process of a patient. Against a black background, it exudes an aura of solemnity and melancholy. In this poignant scene, we witness a suppliant approaching with reverence on the right side - likely either the sick individual or a concerned family member. On the left, Amphiaraos himself administers his curative touch by placing his hand on the patient's shoulder. The tall base panel behind them signifies that these events unfold within sacred grounds. Archinos dedicated this awe-inspiring relief to Amphiaraos as indicated by an inscription found alongside it. Its exquisite details transport us back to ancient Greece, offering insight into their beliefs surrounding medicine and divine intervention. The bas-relief style adds depth and dimensionality to this single object captured in studio lighting. It serves as both an archaeological treasure and a testament to human representation throughout history. With its historical clothing and references to Greek mythology, this artifact invites contemplation about loss, pain, and ultimately hope for recovery
