View of Parkes radio telescope, Australia

Parkes radio telescope. View of Parkes radio telescope in New South Wales, Australia. The dish is 64 metres (210 feet) in diameter and divided into three sections. It has a solid steel plate from its centre to a diameter of 17 metres, a perforated aluminium plate to a diameter of 42 metres, and the rest is a mesh of galvanised steel. The weight of the dish is 300 tonnes. This radio dish is used to observe wavelengths from 5 millimetres to 2 centimetres. Radio astronomy has improved our understanding of the evolution of stars and galaxies. Parkes was completed in 1961, and in 1998 is run as part of the Australia Telescope National Facility

EDITORS COMMENTS
The breathtaking view of the Parkes radio telescope in New South Wales, Australia is a testament to mankind's relentless pursuit of knowledge about our universe. This awe-inspiring print captures the sheer magnitude and intricate design of this remarkable scientific instrument. Standing tall at an impressive 64 metres (210 feet) in diameter, the Parkes radio telescope is divided into three distinct sections. Its structure consists of a solid steel plate at its core, extending to a diameter of 17 metres, followed by a perforated aluminium plate up to 42 metres. The remaining portion is composed of galvanised steel mesh, creating a delicate yet robust framework that supports its weighty mass of 300 tonnes. Designed specifically for observing wavelengths ranging from 5 millimetres to 2 centimetres, this colossal dish has played an instrumental role in advancing our understanding of stars and galaxies. Since its completion in 1961, it has been an integral part of the Australia Telescope National Facility. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded not only of humanity's insatiable curiosity but also the profound impact that radio astronomy has had on unraveling the mysteries beyond our planet. Let us marvel at this extraordinary feat as Science Photo Library immortalizes one small fragment within the vast realm of astrophysics through their lens.
