Smallpox virus

False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the smallpox virus (medical name Variola), which causes high fever & spots that quickly develop into pustules. The virus is transmitted by droplets of sputum (coughed up saliva & mucus) or pus from the skinpocks of an infected person. Most patients recover, although complications such as pneumonia may prove fatal. An attack confers near lifelong immunity. Immunization has all but eradicated the disease, although pockets of resistance remain. This specimen is from one of the last English patients. Magnification: x40, 000 at 6x4.5cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the smallpox virus in all its intricate detail. The false-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) reveals the menacing nature of this medical name Variola, known for causing high fever and rapidly developing pustules. Transmitted through droplets of sputum or pus from an infected person's skinpocks, this virus has historically posed a significant threat to human health. While most patients recover, fatal complications like pneumonia can arise. However, surviving an attack provides near lifelong immunity against future infections. Thanks to immunization efforts, smallpox has been nearly eradicated worldwide. This particular specimen hails from one of the last English patients affected by the disease. Magnified at x40,000 and measuring 6x4.5cm in size, this image captures the essence of a microscopic battle that once plagued humanity. As we admire this remarkable photograph from Science Photo Library, let us reflect on how far we have come in our fight against infectious diseases. Although pockets of resistance still exist today, it serves as a reminder that continued vigilance is necessary to ensure complete eradication and protect future generations from such devastating viruses like smallpox.
