Photoelastic stress of knives and forks F008 / 2032

Coloured light interference pattern of knives and forks. When photographed through cross-polarised white light some transparent plastics display coloured interference effects, according to the pattern of residual stress within the plastic (a result of moulding manufacturing). Areas of similar colour represent regions under similar degrees of stress. This phenomenon, known as photoelasticity, is utilised in engineering situations. Plastic models of bridges, gears, axles, etc may be made and subjected to proportional loads in order to predict the stress patterns that might occur in the real objects

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing world of photoelastic stress in knives and forks. Against a striking black background, the close-up image reveals a vibrant coloured light interference pattern that emerges when transparent plastics are photographed through cross-polarised white light. The intricate patterns seen here represent the residual stress within the plastic, resulting from the manufacturing process. Each area of similar colour signifies regions under comparable degrees of stress. This phenomenon, known as photoelasticity, finds practical application in engineering situations. Engineers utilize this technique by creating plastic models of various objects like bridges, gears, and axles. These models are then subjected to proportional loads to predict potential stress patterns that may occur in real-life scenarios. By understanding these stress distributions beforehand, engineers can design structures capable of withstanding such pressures. This remarkable scientific imaging technique is part of non-destructive testing methods employed in laboratories worldwide. The use of polarized light enables researchers to visualize and analyze stresses without causing any harm or damage to the materials being tested. Through this visually stunning photograph captured by PASIEKA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, we gain insight into how technology and scientific advancements continue to shape our understanding of materials' behavior under different conditions – ultimately leading us towards safer and more efficient designs for everyday objects like cutlery.
