Orville Wright, US aviation pioneer
Orville Wright (1871-1948), American aviation pioneer. Orville and his brother Wilbur ran a small bicycle factory in Dayton, Ohio. They became interested in flight and were inspired by the German glider, Otto Lilienthal. The Wrights began their own experiments, using basic wind tunnels to study aerofoil shapes and designed wing warping as a means of control, emulating the way birds control their flight. They even designed and built their own light-weight engine. On 17 December 1903 at 10.23 am, their powered aircraft, the Wright Flyer, made its first flight with Orville at the controls. The era of aviation was born

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Orville Wright, an American aviation pioneer who forever changed the course of human history. Born in 1871, Orville, along with his brother Wilbur, embarked on a remarkable journey that began in their small bicycle factory in Dayton, Ohio. Driven by their fascination with flight and inspired by German glider Otto Lilienthal, the Wright brothers delved into extensive experiments to unravel the secrets of aviation. They ingeniously used wind tunnels to study aerofoil shapes and developed wing warping as a groundbreaking means of control - mimicking birds' mastery over flight. Undeterred by challenges, they even designed and constructed their own lightweight engine. The culmination of their tireless efforts came on that historic day - 17 December 1903 at precisely 10:23 am. With Orville fearlessly at the controls, their powered aircraft named the Wright Flyer took off into the skies for its maiden flight. In that awe-inspiring moment captured forever within this monochrome image lies not only an aviator but also an emblematic symbol of innovation and determination. This photograph signifies more than just one man's achievement; it marks the birth of an entire era - an era where humanity defied gravity's constraints and soared towards limitless possibilities. Orville Wright's legacy resonates through time as he paved the way for modern aviation. As we gaze upon this portrait today, we are reminded of his indomitable spirit and unwavering pursuit
