Jet stream clouds

Jet stream clouds over eastern Canada, seen from orbit. North is towards bottom. This band of high- altitude clouds runs from bottom right to centre. The jet stream is a narrow band of high-speed winds found between 8-12 kilometres above the Earth. Jet stream winds are driven by the temperature differences between cold polar air and warm tropical air. They may reach speeds of up to 300 kilometres per hour. Cape Breton Island in the northern Atlantic Ocean is seen at lower centre. Photographed from the Space Shuttle Discovery during mission STS-39 in May 1991

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the mesmerizing beauty of jet stream clouds over eastern Canada, as seen from orbit. The image showcases a band of high-altitude clouds stretching from the bottom right to the center, with Cape Breton Island in the northern Atlantic Ocean visible at lower center. The jet stream, depicted as a narrow band of high-speed winds between 8-12 kilometers above Earth's surface, is driven by temperature differences between cold polar air and warm tropical air. These powerful winds can reach speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour, shaping weather patterns and influencing climate dynamics. Taken during mission STS-39 in May 1991 by the Space Shuttle Discovery, this photograph offers a unique perspective on our planet's atmospheric phenomena. It serves as a reminder of the intricate interplay between land, water, wind currents, and cloud formations that contribute to Earth's meteorological systems. As an extraordinary piece of space shuttle imagery captured by Science Photo Library, this print not only highlights the scientific significance but also showcases the artistic allure found within nature itself. It invites us to marvel at our planet's ever-changing weather patterns while appreciating its delicate balance and interconnectedness.
