Dr Mukai served as a payload specialist during the mission which carried the second International Microgravity Laboratory (IML-2) in the Shuttles payload bay. Dr Mukai, a physician, represented Japans National Space Development Agency (NASDA), as IML- 2 contained several experiments designed by Japanese universities and research centres. Mission STS-65 flew on 8-23 July 1994
