Coloured TEM of an orf virus

False-colour transmission electron micrograph of the orf virus, a brick-shaped poxvirus. Notice the characteristic ball of wool appearance under the electron microscope. The virus is responsible for contagious pustular dermatitis, a disease which mainly effects sheep, cattle and goats but is also transmissible to humans. Orf in humans is commonest amongst people in close contact with lambs. The lesions produced are usually painless and disappear after about five weeks. Magnification: x85, 000 at 6x4.5cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-colour transmission electron micrograph of the orf virus, a brick-shaped poxvirus. The intricate details captured under the electron microscope reveal its distinct ball of wool appearance, adding to its allure. The orf virus is notorious for causing contagious pustular dermatitis, primarily affecting sheep, cattle, and goats. However, it can also be transmitted to humans. Amongst people in close contact with lambs, such as farmers and veterinarians, cases of orf in humans are most common. Remarkably, the lesions produced by this virus are usually painless and tend to disappear after approximately five weeks. This unique characteristic adds an intriguing aspect to our understanding of this infectious disease. With a magnification level of x85,000 at 6x4.5cm size, this image allows us to delve into the microscopic world where viruses thrive and wreak havoc on both animals and humans alike. Science Photo Library has once again provided us with an exceptional visual representation that not only educates but also captivates our imagination about the hidden wonders within our natural environment.
