EDITORS COMMENTS
Something to smile about, Mukisi, Chester Zoo's famous Eastern Lowland Gorilla, is off to Belgium to mate with two female gorillas. Mukisi has been a beloved resident of Chester Zoo for 25 years since he was just three years old. In an effort to help preserve the species in Europe, he is being given as a gift to Antwerpe Zoo where the only two female Eastern Lowland gorillas reside. The wild population of these magnificent creatures is dwindling, with only 500 remaining worldwide. Unfortunately, they are often seen as pests by local villagers when they unintentionally destroy their maize crops while searching for food. This relocation and breeding program aims not only to increase the numbers of this endangered species but also raise awareness about their importance in our ecosystem. In this photo from April 1985 captured by Mirrorpix, we see Mukisi indulging in one of his favorite treats - a ripe banana. His expression appears grumpy and serious at first glance but perhaps it conceals a sense of anticipation for his upcoming journey and new chapter in life. As we bid farewell to Mukisi on his exciting adventure abroad, let us celebrate the tireless efforts made by zoos around the world towards conservation and preservation. Together, we can ensure that future generations will continue to have something truly remarkable – like Mukisi's infectious smile –to cherish.
