EDITORS COMMENTS
This collection of four vintage prints offers a unique perspective into the construction of the Festival of Britain site on London's South Bank between June 1950 and March 1951. The first image, dated October 1950, presents an aerial view looking north across the River Thames. The iconic London landmarks of the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben can be seen in the distance, while the South Bank of the Thames is a hive of activity with the Festival of Britain site taking shape. The second and third prints, both undated but believed to be from late 1950 or early 1951, provide closer views of the construction site. In the second print, we see the progression of the Festival of Britain site from a mostly empty area to a bustling construction site, with cranes and scaffolding dominating the landscape. The third print offers a more detailed look at the site, revealing the beginnings of the iconic Festival of Britain pavilions and the Southbank Centre, which would become a cultural hub for Londoners and visitors alike. The final print, dated March 1951, provides a bird's eye view of the completed Festival of Britain site. The pavilions, which showcased the best of British design, art, and innovation, are now in place, and the South Bank of the Thames is transformed into a vibrant and exciting destination. These rare and evocative prints offer a fascinating glimpse into the history of post-war London and the creation of one of the city's most beloved cultural landmarks.
