EDITORS COMMENTS
Five F8U-1 Crusaders from VF-211, the Black Sheep, make their approach to the USS Midway in Far Eastern waters off the coast of the Philippines. The Vought F8U-1 Crusader was a single-engine, supersonic, all-weather carrier-based fighter aircraft, which served in the United States Navy and Marine Corps from the late 1950s to the late 1970s. The Crusaders of VF-211 were part of the USS Midway Carrier Strike Group, which was deployed to the Western Pacific in 1965. In this photograph, the Crusaders can be seen entering the landing pattern, with the aircraft carrier looming in the background. The USS Midway, an Essex-class aircraft carrier, was the longest-serving US Navy aircraft carrier of the 20th century, and played a crucial role in numerous military operations during the Cold War. The Crusaders were known for their distinctive appearance and impressive performance, with the ability to reach speeds over Mach 1.5. This photograph captures a moment in history, as the Crusaders make their final approach to the carrier, ready to touch down and be a part of the ongoing military operations in the region.
