EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving showcases Robert Peel (1788-1850), a prominent British politician who played a significant role in shaping the political landscape of 19th century England. Born in Bury, Lancashire, Peel rose to prominence as a member of the Tory Party, serving twice as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Peel's political career began in earnest in 1809 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Tamworth. Over the next several decades, he held various positions in both the Tory and Whig administrations, demonstrating his ability to work across party lines. Peel is best known for his role in the repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846, a controversial move that aimed to reduce the high tariffs on imported grain. This policy, known as the "Peelites," helped to pave the way for free trade in Britain and contributed to the country's economic growth. Despite his political successes, Peel's tenure as Prime Minister was not without controversy. His support for the repeal of the Corn Laws led to a split within the Tory Party, and he was forced to resign in 1846. However, his legacy as a statesman and reformer endured, and he is remembered as one of the great figures of British history. This beautifully colored engraving captures Peel in the prime of his political career, dressed in the formal attire of the time, with a serious expression that conveys the weight of the responsibilities he bore as a leader. The intricate details of the engraving, from the folds of his coat to the texture of his hair, make for a striking and historically significant image.
