EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Dumont de Sainte-Croix's Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology, published in Paris between 1816 and 1830, showcases two intriguing and distinct ground-dwelling birds: the Rain Quail (Coturnix coromandelica) and the Red-legged Partridge (Alectoris rufa). The illustration, produced under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin and engraved by David, boasts the meticulous touch of Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later the artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The Rain Quail, depicted on the left, is a small, plump bird with a brown back, black and white barring on its flanks, and a distinctive red crown. Native to Asia, this bird is known for its ability to camouflage itself in the rain, earning it the name 'Rain Quail.' The Red-legged Partridge, on the other hand, is characterized by its reddish-brown legs, black and white stripes on its sides, and a speckled brown back. Originally from Europe and Asia, this bird is a popular game bird due to its tender meat. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this engraving serve as a testament to the exceptional craftsmanship of the time. The careful observation and accurate representation of these birds reflect the dedication and passion of the naturalists and artists involved in the production of this remarkable work. This image offers a glimpse into the rich history of zoological illustration and the exploration of the natural world during the early 19th century.
