EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the scenic beauty of Lyle Hill in Greenock, Scotland, with the Free French Memorial standing proudly on its western brow. Dedicated to the brave Free French forces who fought valiantly in the Second World War, the memorial is built in the shape of the Cross of Lorraine, a symbol of the French Resistance. The memorial bears plaques commemorating the loss of several vessels, including the Flower-class corvettes Alyssa and Mimosa, and the submarine Surcouf. Locally, it is also linked to the tragic memory of the loss of the Maille Breze, which exploded at the Tail of the Bank. The serene Cardwell Bay and the picturesque town of Gourock are visible in the background, adding to the scenic charm of the image. This photograph, taken in the 1950s, is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the war and the enduring bond between Scotland and France.
