EDITORS COMMENTS
This charming chromolithograph depicts a pair of Eastern Wood Pewees (Contopus virens) and Orchard Orioles (Icterus spurius) in their nest. The Eastern Wood Pewee, a small tyrant flycatcher, is perched on the left, its distinctive black mask and olive-green back contrasting with the bright orange and black plumage of the Orchard Oriole on the right. The Orchard Oriole is a New World blackbird, known for its distinctive hanging nests made of grasses and fibers, which can be found in orchards and other open habitats. The illustration is based on an original work by Edwin Sheppard for Thomas George Gentry's seminal ornithological publication, "Nests and Eggs of the Birds of the United States," published by J.A. Wagenseller in Philadelphia in 1881. Sheppard's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate depiction of the birds and their nest, which features a clutch of eggs nestled among the twigs. The use of chromolithography, a popular printing technique of the time, allows for vibrant colors and intricate detail, making this an exquisite example of late 19th-century ornithological illustration. The Eastern Wood Pewee and Orchard Oriole are both migratory birds, with the Eastern Wood Pewee breeding in eastern North America and the Orchard Oriole in the eastern and central United States and southern Canada. The inclusion of both species in this illustration highlights the rich biodiversity of the avian world and the importance of documenting and preserving it for future generations.
