EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant and captivating print depicts Publius Aelius Hadrianus, better known as Hadrian, the Roman Emperor who ruled from 117 to 138 AD. Hadrian is renowned for his extensive travels throughout the empire, which led to the construction and improvement of numerous public works projects, including walls, roads, temples, and aqueducts. Born on January 24, 76 AD, in Italica, Spain, Hadrian began his political career as a magistrate in Rome. He was adopted by Emperor Trajan in 117 AD and succeeded him upon his death. Hadrian's reign is marked by his military campaigns against the Parthians and the Germanic tribes, as well as his efforts to strengthen the Roman border defenses. One of Hadrian's most notable achievements was the construction of Hadrian's Wall in Britain, which marked the northernmost extent of the Roman Empire. The wall stretched over 73 miles and was built to protect the empire from the raids of Scottish tribes. Hadrian also established a permanent Roman presence in Dacia (modern-day Romania), which led to the establishment of the province of Dacia. Hadrian was also a patron of the arts and sciences, and he supported the development of the library at Antioch and the establishment of the Temple of Venus and Roma in Rome. He is also known for his architectural innovations, including the Pantheon, which is still standing in Rome today. This color print captures the essence of Hadrian's reign, showcasing his regal attire, stern expression, and the imperial insignia of the laurel wreath and scepter. The rich colors and intricate details bring the image to life, transporting us back to the ancient Roman world and allowing us to witness the legacy of one of its most celebrated emperors.
