EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the scene of Field Artillery on the Western Front during World War I, around 1917. The image features soldiers of the Royal Field Artillery, expertly maneuvering their guns in preparation for battle. At the center, we see Captain Gilbert Holiday (1879-1937), a talented artist and soldier. Holiday's early life was spent in St. John's Wood, where he would often watch the Royal Horse Artillery from his window, marking his first encounter with horses. He went on to receive an education at Westminster School and studied at the Royal Academy Schools. Before enlisting in the Royal Field Artillery, Holiday worked as an illustrator for various publications, including The Graphic, The Tatler, and The Illustrated London News. During his military service, Holiday continued to paint, creating numerous works for army messes. In this photograph, we see him in his element, leading his men with determination and skill. The muddy terrain and somber atmosphere serve as a poignant reminder of the harsh realities of war. This image not only showcases the bravery and resilience of the soldiers on the Western Front but also highlights the artistic talent that emerged from the trenches during this pivotal historical moment.
