EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning image is a plate from the Codex Troano, a Maya manuscript dating back to the late Postclassic period, around 1500 AD. The Codex Troano is one of only four surviving Maya codices, and it is considered one of the most important sources of information about the Maya civilization's religious and calendric beliefs. This particular plate, labeled as plate xxii, is part of a calendar used by Maya priests to communicate with their gods and understand the cycles of nature. The image depicts a variety of gods and symbolic creatures, each with their unique significance in Maya mythology. The central figure in this plate is the god Chaak, the Maya rain deity, who is depicted with his characteristic feathered headdress and a large rain glyph above his head. To his left, we see the god of maize, or the corn god, who is often associated with the cycle of agriculture and the changing of the seasons. On the right side of the plate, we see a series of symbolic creatures, including a jaguar, a crocodile, and a bird. These creatures represent various aspects of the natural world and the forces that govern it. The intricate glyphs and symbols that surround the figures add to the mystical and spiritual significance of this plate. The Codex Troano is a precious reminder of the rich cultural heritage of the Maya civilization, and this plate is a testament to their complex and fascinating belief system. The manuscript provides valuable insights into the Maya people's understanding of the universe and their place within it, making it an invaluable resource for historians, anthropologists, and anyone interested in the history of human civilization.
