EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing caricature captures the sensational trial of Susan Willis Fletcher and Juliette Hart-Davies, two Victorian women entangled in a web of spiritualism and deception in the 1880s. Susan Willis Fletcher, depicted on the left, was a spiritualist medium, who claimed to communicate with the dead for a living. Her clientele included the wealthy and influential, among them Mrs Juliette Hart-Davies. Mrs Hart-Davies, portrayed on the right, was a vulnerable and trusting woman who sought solace and comfort in Fletcher's séances. However, Fletcher took advantage of her gullibility and swindled her out of a valuable necklace, worth thousands in today's currency. The caricature humorously exaggerates the physical differences between the two women, with Fletcher's stern expression and Hart-Davies's wide-eyed, naive appearance. The trial of Susan Willis Fletcher for obtaining property by deception made headlines in 1881, and the public was fascinated by the case. The legal proceedings exposed the darker side of spiritualism and the exploitation of vulnerable individuals. Fletcher's conviction sent a clear message that even those who claimed to communicate with the dead were not above the law. This caricature serves as a reminder of the complexities of Victorian society and the human capacity for both belief and deception. It also highlights the importance of critical thinking and skepticism, even in the face of seemingly supernatural phenomena.
