Boris Godunov (1551-1605): A Portrait of Power and Uncertain Legacy This vividly colored engraving captures the enigmatic figure of Boris Godunov, Tsar of All Russia from 1598 to 1605. Born into a non-Rurikid family, Godunov rose to power as a de facto regent for the young Tsarevich Feodor Ivanovich and eventually seized the throne himself. The image portrays Godunov in the regal attire of a ruler, wearing a grand hat adorned with a cross and holding a scepter and orb. The orb, symbolizing sovereignty, is crowned with a cross and is known as a globus cruciger. The cross-bearing scepter further emphasizes his religious authority. Godunov's stern yet determined face, framed by a full moustache, conveys a sense of strength and resolve. The background of the portrait features a globe, symbolizing Godunov's role as a worldly ruler and his connection to the modern age. The image, created during the 16th or early 17th century, is a testament to the artistic skill of its engraver. Boris Godunov's reign was marked by relative peace and stability, but his legitimacy was constantly challenged due to his non-Rurikid descent. His death in 1605 was followed by a period of political instability and the eventual rise of the Romanov Dynasty. This portrait offers a glimpse into the complex history of Russia during a pivotal moment in its development.
