Trial-trip on the Metropolitan (underground) Railway: the train passing Portland-road station, 1862. Creator: Unknown

Trial-trip on the Metropolitan (Underground) Railway: the train passing the Portland-road station, [London], 1862. This railway...has been bored successfully amidst a complicated network of gaspipes, waterpipes, and sewers, from Paddington to Victoria-street...A large number of the shareholders, together with the members of the vestry of St. Pancras, and the representatives of some other parishes through which the line passes, were conveyed on Saturday week over the line, and the appearance of the works was such as to give satisfaction to all parties interested in this great undertaking. The visitors were conveyed in a train made up of long carriages, such as are intended to rim upon the line, and railway trucks temporarily fitted up with seats. The train was drawn by a locomotive the whole distance from the mouth of the tunnel in the new Victoria-street to the Great Western Railway station at Paddington. The arrangements for the starting and conveyance of the train were in the hands of the Great Western Railway Company, which, it is stated, has undertaken to work the line...In an early part of the day the line was officially inspected by the Government Inspector of Railways'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This image showcases a historic moment in London's transportation history: the Metropolitan Railway's trial-trip on August 29, 1862. The train is depicted passing the Portland-road station, making its way through the newly excavated tunnel that would eventually connect Paddington and Victoria-street. The Metropolitan Railway, the world's first underground railway, had been meticulously constructed amidst a labyrinth of gas pipes, water pipes, and sewers. The successful completion of this engineering feat was a cause for great celebration, as evidenced by the large number of shareholders, St. Pancras vestry members, and representatives of affected parishes who gathered for this significant event. The visitors were treated to a ride in a long carriage, similar to those intended for regular use on the line, and railway trucks temporarily fitted with seats. The train was pulled by a locomotive for the entire journey from the Victoria-street entrance to the Great Western Railway station at Paddington. The logistics of starting and conveying the train were overseen by the Great Western Railway Company, which had been contracted to operate the line. Earlier in the day, the line underwent an official government inspection by the Inspector of Railways, adding another layer of legitimacy to this groundbreaking achievement. This trial-trip marked a pivotal moment in London's transportation history, paving the way for the widespread adoption of underground railways and revolutionizing the way people commuted within the city.
