Sharpham Park, Somerset, the Birthplace of Fielding the Novelist, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Sharpham Park, Somerset, the Birthplace of [Henry] Fielding the Novelist, 1850. At Sharpham Park - birth-place of the father of the English novel - were, till lately, preserved a coat and leathers which Fielding once wore. The greater part of the house has been taken down; the remaining portion is tenanted as a farm dwelling. Sharpham has, however, been an important place: it was originally the country-house of the Abbot of Glastonbury, who came hither by water from his abbey. A well-timbered park surrounded the manor-house at Sharpham: of this little remains, the land being divided, and stocked with cattle, whose well-conditioned sides proclaim the fatness of the soil'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Sharpham Park, Somerset: The Birthplace of Henry Fielding, Novelist, 1850 This evocative image, taken from the Illustrated London News in 1850, captures the historic and literary significance of Sharpham Park in Somerset, England. The park is renowned as the birthplace of Henry Fielding, a pioneering figure in English literature as the father of the novel. At the time this photograph was taken, remnants of Fielding's childhood home still stood, including a coat and leathers he once wore. However, much of the house had been dismantled, and the remaining portion served as a farm dwelling. Sharpham Park holds an essential place in history, having once been the country residence of the Abbot of Glastonbury. The well-timbered park that surrounded the manor-house has largely disappeared, with the land now divided and used for agriculture. The cattle grazing in the fields attest to the fertility of the soil. The Abbot of Glastonbury would have reached Sharpham Park by water from his abbey, making it an essential destination for travel during the 18th century. The park's historical significance extends beyond its literary connections, as it was also the setting for Henry Fielding's satirical work, "The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling," and parts of "The Adventures of Joseph Andrews." Today, Sharpham Park remains an essential tourist attraction for literature enthusiasts and history buffs alike, offering a glimpse into the past and the rich heritage of English literature.
