Napoleon Bonaparte, 1840. Artist: Goutiere

Napoleon Bonaparte, 1840. Portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) made in the year of the Battle of Waterloo (1815). Napoleon enjoyed a meteoric rise through the ranks of the French Revolutionary army. In 1799 he led a coup to overthrow the government, the Directory, and became first consul and effective dictator of France. In 1804, he declared himself Emperor, and embarked on a series of military campaigns across Europe, the Napoleonic Wars. Victories such as Austerlitz and Jena led to France establishing its power across much of the continent. In 1812, however, Napoleon embarked on a disastrous invasion of Russia and defeat at Leipzig in 1813 led to his abdication and exile to Elba. He ecaped in 1815, raised another army, but was finally defeated by Wellington at Waterloo, and exiled again to St Helena

EDITORS COMMENTS
Napoleon Bonaparte, 1840. A captivating portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), painted by Goutiere in the year of the historic Battle of Waterloo (1815). This remarkable print captures the essence of a man who rose from humble beginnings to become one of history's most influential figures. Napoleon's journey began as a soldier in the French Revolutionary army, where his exceptional leadership skills propelled him through the ranks. In 1799, he orchestrated a coup that toppled the government and established himself as first consul and de facto ruler of France. His ambition knew no bounds, and in 1804 he declared himself Emperor. The Napoleonic Wars soon followed, with Napoleon leading his armies across Europe in a series of military campaigns. Victories at Austerlitz and Jena solidified France's dominance on the continent. However, hubris led to his downfall when he embarked on an ill-fated invasion of Russia in 1812. Defeat at Leipzig forced Napoleon into abdication and exile on Elba. Yet, true to his indomitable spirit, he escaped in 1815 and raised another army for one last stand against Wellington at Waterloo. Alas, this battle marked his final defeat. This exquisite print showcases Napoleon adorned in regal attire befitting an emperor. The intricate details capture every aspect - from his distinguished uniform embellished with medals and epaulettes to his commanding presence. A symbol of power and ambition intertwined with triumphs and failures, this portrait immortalizes Napoleon Bonaparte - a man whose legacy continues to shape history.
