EDITORS COMMENTS
This etching from the late 19th century depicts a scene inspired by Gustave Moreau's painting from 1865. Titled "Head of Orpheus" it portrays a Thracian girl carrying the severed head of Orpheus, the legendary lyrist and poet of ancient Greece. The young girl, barefooted and dressed in Hellenic attire, stands on a rocky seashore formation with her haunting burden. The image captures both the beauty and tragedy associated with this mythological tale. Orpheus was known for his enchanting music that could move even stones and trees. However, after losing his beloved wife Eurydice to death, he descended into the underworld to retrieve her soul but failed when he looked back too soon. In this poignant moment frozen in time, we witness the Thracian girl as she carries Orpheus' beheaded corpse towards an unknown destination. The etching skillfully conveys her sorrowful expression while highlighting the contrast between life and death through its intricate details. As we gaze upon this artwork, we are reminded of Orpheus' tragic fate and his eternal connection to music and poetry. This print serves as a powerful reminder of how art can capture profound emotions and narratives that transcend time itself.
