Donkey in Craco - The ghost town

Craco is a ghost town located in the region of Basilicata, southern Italy. In 1963, people living in the small town began to evacuate due to a landslide. In 1972 a flood worsened the situation and after the earthquake in 1980 Craco was completely abandoned.
Since the 50s it has been the setting for many movies, like The Passion of The Christ by Mel Gibson

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the haunting beauty of a donkey wandering through the deserted streets of Craco, a ghost town nestled in the Basilicata region of southern Italy. Once a thriving community, Craco fell victim to natural disasters that forced its inhabitants to evacuate. In 1963, a devastating landslide struck, prompting people to leave their homes behind. The situation worsened in 1972 when a flood ravaged the area and finally culminated with an earthquake in 1980, rendering Craco completely abandoned. Despite its desolation, this forsaken town has not lost its allure. Since the 1950s, it has served as an evocative backdrop for numerous films including Mel Gibson's acclaimed "The Passion of The Christ". Its eerie atmosphere and crumbling architecture have attracted filmmakers from around the world seeking to capture its unique essence. In this photograph by Federica Gentile, we witness the resilience of nature as it reclaims what was once inhabited by humans. Against a backdrop of weathered buildings and cobblestone streets, the lone donkey stands as a silent observer amidst decay and abandonment. Its presence symbolizes both solitude and tenacity in face of adversity. Gentile's masterful use of color brings life to this otherwise forgotten place while maintaining an air of mystery and melancholy. This print serves as a poignant reminder that even in desolation there is still beauty waiting to be discovered.
