Prince Rahotepas slab stela, Meidum, Egypt, lithograph, published in 1897

Visual reconstruction of the Limestone panel (Slab stela) of Prince Rahotep seated before offerings: from the false door in the tomb of Rahotep, Faiyum, Meidum, Egypt, circa 2600 BC (4th dynasty, since 1892 in the British Museum, London). The deceased is shown seated on a simple, bull-legged, backless chair, one hand clasped on his chest and the other extended towards an offering-table carrying half-loaves of bread. The names of conventional offerings are written above the table and below it to one side of the stand. To the right of this scene is a standard offering-list of the early type. The name and titles of the deceased are written in larger signs on both sides of and above the main scene. Lithograph, published in 1897

EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph, published in 1897, showcases a visual reconstruction of the Prince Rahotepas slab stela from Meidum, Egypt. The original limestone panel dates back to approximately 2600 BC and has been housed in the British Museum since 1892. The focal point of this artwork is Prince Rahotep himself, depicted seated before a table laden with offerings. He rests upon a simple yet elegant bull-legged chair without a backrest. One hand gently clasps his chest while the other extends towards the offering-table carrying half-loaves of bread. Above and below the table are inscriptions detailing the names of traditional offerings, providing insight into ancient Egyptian customs and rituals surrounding death and afterlife beliefs. Adjacent to this scene lies an early type standard offering-list on one side. The name and titles of Prince Rahotep are prominently displayed in larger signs on both sides and above the main scene, emphasizing his importance within society during Egypt's Fourth Dynasty. Through this lithograph, we gain a glimpse into ancient Egyptian culture as it beautifully captures not only intricate details but also symbolic elements that held significant meaning for those who lived thousands of years ago. It serves as a testament to our fascination with history's remnants and our desire to preserve them for future generations to appreciate their rich heritage.
