EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Short-tailed Coatee worn by Lieutenant Henry Anderson during the Waterloo Campaign in 1815. The vibrant scarlet and green fabric, adorned with gilt buttons, exudes a sense of regality and military prowess. This exquisite piece is part of the collection at the National Army Museum in London. The 2nd Battalion of the 69th (South Lincolnshire) Regiment faced immense challenges during their time at Waterloo. They suffered heavy casualties at Quatre Bras, losing one of their colors to French Cavalry. Positioned near Hougoumont, they endured relentless artillery fire and further attacks from enemy cavalry. However, despite these trials, they played a crucial role in repulsing the formidable French Imperial Guard during the climax of the battle. It was during this heroic stand that Lt Henry Anderson sustained his wounds. This photograph not only captures an extraordinary uniform but also tells a story of resilience and bravery on the battlefield. Lt Anderson's coatee symbolizes both his personal sacrifice and that of his comrades-in-arms within this renowned regiment. As we admire this remarkable artifact from history, let us remember those who fought valiantly under its banner - soldiers who faced unimaginable hardships to secure victory for their nation.
