EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print captured by General in 1962, a group of determined young women from the Post Office Supplies factories at Holloway and Enfield can be seen demanding equality with men. It was a sunny day at the seaside in Hastings, Sussex when these courageous ladies decided to take action. Armed with their placards advocating for equal holidays, they fearlessly invaded the Pier Ballroom where over 500 male colleagues from the Post Office Engineering Union were attending their annual conference. Undeterred by the crowd of men surrounding them, these girls assembled telephone instruments stood united in their cause. Their message was clear - they wanted fair treatment when it came to rest and leisure time. While men enjoyed double leave for relaxation and enjoyment, women were left with only half that amount. This demonstration aimed to challenge this unjust disparity. The significance of this photograph lies not only in its depiction of a powerful moment during the fight for gender equality but also as a reminder of how far society has come since then. It serves as an inspiration for future generations to continue striving towards equal rights and opportunities regardless of gender or any other societal construct.
