EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the majestic No. 111, The Great Bear, in its prime at Paddington Station around the year 1910. The locomotive, a 4-6-2 Pacific type, was built in 1908 and named after the constellation of the Great Bear, a fitting moniker for its impressive size and power. The Great Bear was a marvel of engineering, its sleek lines and polished metal gleaming in the station's dimly lit environment. The steam engine, with its large driving wheels and powerful cylinders, was a sight to behold as it prepared to depart on its next journey. The thick plumes of steam billowing from its stack added to the sense of raw power and motion. Paddington Station, with its grand architecture and bustling activity, provided the perfect backdrop for this magnificent machine. Passengers and railway workers alike would have paused to take in the sight of The Great Bear as it prepared to leave the station, its whistle signaling the start of another journey. Sadly, the golden age of steam was not to last, and The Great Bear was withdrawn from service in 1924. It was later rebuilt as a 4-6-0 Viscount Churchill, marking the end of an era for this iconic locomotive. Today, the memory of The Great Bear lives on through photographs like this one, which transport us back to a time when steam power ruled the rails.
