Swindon Works employees manouvering a wheel set by crane, c. 1940
In this photograph a female crane operator is working alongside two male colleagues, manoeuvring a locomotive wheel set into place. What is particularly interesting to note in this image is the large expanse of roof lights, which have been blacked out as a precaution against air raids. The windows were painted with a thick black paint in order to prevent light from the workshops highlighting the Works as a target for air strikes. This had the effect of turning previously light airy shops into dark, gloomy places to work

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the STEAM Museum of the GWR takes us back to the bustling Swindon Works during World War II. In this snapshot, we witness a remarkable sight as a team of dedicated employees maneuver a locomotive wheel set into place with the aid of a crane. What sets this image apart is the presence of a female crane operator working alongside her two male colleagues, showcasing women's vital contribution to war work. However, what truly catches our attention in this photograph is not only the skilled teamwork but also an intriguing detail that reveals how wartime precautions transformed these workshops. The large expanse of roof lights has been blacked out, painted over with thick black paint as protection against air raids. This measure aimed to prevent any light emanating from within and potentially attracting enemy attacks. The consequence was an unexpected transformation – once bright and airy spaces turned into dark and gloomy places for these industrious workers. It serves as a poignant reminder of how individuals adapted their surroundings and made sacrifices during times of conflict. This powerful image encapsulates both gender equality in essential roles and the impact war had on everyday life at Swindon Works during this tumultuous period in history.
